Ministers And Bags : Time To Serve: Pro Bono

"To do great things is difficult; but to command great things is more difficult." -Friedrich Nietzsche

What does a minister without a portfolio carry? To which office? What do such people do? Who gets a bag? And who does?

These are question Nigerian's president, Mr Mohammadu Buhari must answer some disappointed people this week.

Nigerians are used to taking out huge paid adverts whenever their tribes people are made ministers.

If the ministry is juicy, say like Petroleum or Land and Housing, such appointments often mean an end to poverty for the lucky ones' clan.

But things are taking a very different twist.
First it took Nigeria's president, Mohammadu Buhari, 6 months to come up with the list of the lucky ones.

Then the news from India: Nigeria cannot afford to pay 42 Ministers. So some of those screened will not have portfolios.

Nigeria in its Pledge Of Allegiance often has it citizens say they would serve Nigeria their country.
Now is the time to serve. No money.

This development raises a few questions.

First, what was the wisdom that informed Mr Buhari to nominate men and women he knew he won't use?
Let us imagine for talks sake that he didn't know how broke Nigeria was when he was pressured to make the nomination after coming back from America.

It is not a good thing for a President to be reminded of reality. He should know ahead of everyone.

Two, would Amaechi work for free? I think yes, he would. Not because he is altruistic, but working free of pay would make him a good man. Nobody will bother with how much he is rumoured to have stolen as governor.

The problem with conscripts, as those without portfolios would be, is that they are not motivated.

So Mr Buhari will not be getting a vibrant cabinet.

As he himself agreed in India those men who begged to be screened will also call you Baba go slow.
