Nigeria Loots MTN

The problem with the poor man is that he gets used to it.
    - Abraham Lincoln.

MTN Nigeria, was yesterday, fined 1.04 Trillion Naira( $5.2 BillIon) by the NCC.

The record amount was heaved on MTN because "It failed to delist unregistered sims. Thereby undermining the efforts of the government to tackle insecurity"

When, at a meeting with National Security Advisers Office, the phone companies were asked to regularise registration of sim cards, MTN had no idea that might be its last friendly meeting with its often hostile host.

Sim cards are not registered abroad .Even in Israel that is circled by 15 hostile nations.

That MTN is rich is not in doubt. What is certain is that Nigeria is jealous of those riches. Attempts to get them to be on the stock exchange failed.

MTN's cash cannot be trapped in a vault by Nigeria's CBN. Stanbic IBTC and City in Victoria Island of Lagos funnel the cash

As poor people often get envious of the rich, Nigeria, now a truly poor nation, goes after the richest company on its soil.

Whatever the outcome, the mistake has been made. Namely that, people will think back to when Mr Mohammadu Buhari was first head of state. And what happened to foreign companies.

It also shows that the Nigeria government would blame anything for losing to Boko Haram. At least for now.
By the way, a NITEL arm, with +23404 was registered before MTN. What happened to it?

Whatever Nigeria gets from this fine has already been lost in trust and Public Relations.
No foreign companies will be knocking on Nigeria's door anytime soon.

How tragic for a nation that needs all the foreign support it can get.
