MTN Fined $5.2Billion (N1.04trn) by NCC For SIM Deactivation Default

For failing to disconnect unregistered SIM, the Nigeria Communication Commission has fined MTN Nigeria the sum of $5Billion,  for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered Sim cards bought before January 2012.

According to media reports, MTN allegedly had pre-registered SIMs on its database, thereby making it difficult to verify details of subscribers from biometric attributes, ultimately compromising national security.

The NCC in September had sanctioned all four of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications companies including MTN for having pre-registered SIMs on their database.
